Michelle taught 5th grade for 5 years in Dallas Fort-Worth. While attending graduate school to become a principal, she worked as a florist doing small weddings and freelance work. She quickly fell in love with creating and designing through flowers. She decided it’d be a hobby!
Parker, Michelle, and 2-week old Porter picked up their lives and moved to Lubbock, Texas for Parker (husband) to earn his PhD in Counseling Psychology from Texas Tech. She decided to stay home with Porter (son) and teach college courses online. Nine months later, she and Parker found out they were pregnant with baby #2 and started to make the usual preparations. They were excited to find out the gender of the baby and counted down the days to the twenty-week appointment!
At the long-awaited appointment, the doctors were unable to find the baby’s heartbeat. Michelle delivered her little girl, Noel Elizabeth on September 21, 2017. Noel’s birth was different than Porter’s. There were no happy tears. There was no bassinet. She left the hospital with nothing in her arms. Empty was all she felt.
While planning her angel baby’s funeral, she decided she wanted to do the flowers. Obviously, someone so perfect and precious needed flowers equally perfect and precious. Michelle clipped, prepared, and arranged each flower. Hours passed before she realized how warm, complete, and comforted she felt. For the first time since hearing the news that her baby was gone, she felt absolute peace.
Realizing the power that comes from creating with flowers, she decided to share that love and blessing with others. Pursuing a career in floral design is her way of sharing Noel with the world. A portion of all proceeds goes to our halos for angels program, which deliveries fresh flowers to families and nurses in the NICU in honor of Noel Elizabeth. Fresh flowers cannot replace a sick or lost child, but they give moms and dads something to hold onto when they leave the hospital empty-handed.
Michelle is grateful for her customers and hopes that they can feel love, light, and peace from each arrangement she creates!
In 2017, Poppies and Peonies added event styling to their services to grow their connections with people and share their talents.
